2. Monochrome Gallery

Monochrome Gallery is one of my favorite Wordpress magazines at the moment, and I’ve created a couple of sites for friends using it. It has a neat design that features five stories with pictures down the bottom, and a main slideshow that scrolls through recent posts. There are also great sidebars for bits and pieces, asides, and ads if you prefer. A good example of a theme using it is here (most notably with the addition of a header picture).

Before you download it though, keep in mind that the various bells and whistles can be tricky to set up, and the designer’s instructions left me with a few questions. For that reason, I’ve made my own tutorial for setting up Monochrome Gallery, that hopefully should get you set up and on your way as fast as possible.

3. Modern Paper

Take out the navigation bar, add in a big image header, and you have one fast internet magazine.

A lot like Modern Paper highlighted earlier, this has a nice variation where small sections of text are highlighted in the middle column - a nice option you might want to have for your project.

5. Arthemia

A truly gorgeous theme, with a great drop down menu and colors. This elegant theme can also be chopped and changed by removing elements. Just leave the front page sections you’d like in the theme editor.

6. Jello Wala Mello

Another great theme for showing a whole bunch of information on the start page for your readers to browse in further detail. If anyone knows of an example of this theme with a logo in the top section, let me know. Other great modifications for this theme just come from a simple font and color change - for instance, the theme looks great with just a simple white background instead of yellow.

7. Wordpress Magazine

A lovely, professional looking theme that can be happily “tweaked”, or used as-is. I even like using the logo supplied, and have made a favicon to go with it which I’ll post if anyone is interested. Check it out.

8. Mimbo

Perhaps the most stylish magazine - dare we say overly so? Mimbo is a classic of the genre, and with good reason. A little tricky to set up, but worth the effort.

9. The Morning After

I have a love hate relationship with The Morning After. On the one hand, it is one of the most desirable “open” page magazine themes out there, made in response to a survey of all the ingredients people wanted in a free wordpress theme. It has all sorts of great features, like a easy-to-print function for posts, asides, and featured articles. On the other hand, adding images to the front page is more annoying than with any other theme I’ve used. So many times I’ve started a project with The Morning After, and then swapped a little later. Perhaps I’m looking at it wrong, and you’ll solve this puzzle. Let us know. The prizes are pretty darn big. Check out the preview to see what it can do.

10. Branford

The elegant grandfather of the magazine set, this Wordpress skin makes a blog look a million bucks. I’d love to see a funked-up version of Branford - it looks like it could loosen up a bit and be a completely different theme. If anyone has any creative examples, let us know.

1. Website Traffic

One of my favorite business-like themes, you know it’s a serious company because there’s nowhere to put ads on the front page. Or, the whole thing is one giant ad. If you look at companies like General Electric, they go for a feel that is not dissimilar.

2. Corporate 1.0

Ok, it looks a little plain from the screenshot, but replace the title with a logo, soften the navigation menu a bit, and replace the other elements with ads and shopping menus, and you could have a site not dissimilar to a Dynadot or a Kodak. Let us know if you have any success. Even left as it is this Wordpress theme wouldn’t form a too bad intro to a small company or startup.

3. Artificial Intelligence

This might be a good company site for someone with a hosting, domain selling, or other IT business. The sphere themed header is quite smooth, and you could add your own logo over it, or replace the title in the top left hand corner to make a professional theme.

4. Timeless Perceptions

Going from high end to low end here, this is one of the Wordpress Themes that I’ve had some success with as an online store. Sometimes the best Wordpress themes are ones you wouldn’t invent yourself in a month of Sundays. It sort of reminds me of a budget, fast moving camera or binoculars store, and so that’s what I’ve given it. I even left the little flame logo because it suited the “hot deals” theme.

5. Template Pro Shopping Template

Ok, so it’s not my favorite style of theme, and in this case it’s a website template not a Wordpress - or even free. But some times you are selling to an audience that just likes the reliability of a type of store they’ve seen a million times. Template Pro Shopping Template costs $15, which is pretty cheap compared to having a website built. If you buy this this theme, leave a comment - or let us know if you find a better one.

6. Gallery Theme

This template is usually used for displaying website designs (which I’m becoming a little tired of seeing, to be honest!). But it’s real potential is that just about anything can be inserted into the left table of images.

Shopping items such as books, appliances, software, or anything else can go here. I’ve even seen this site used as a great real estate site. Even if you offer a service, these boxes can be used for offers, informations, or other promotions and previews.

7. Real Estate Clean 1.0

There are loads of real estate themes out there, most of them not too bad. If you would like to browse a whole lot of them, you can do so here.

Personally, our favorite is Real Estate Clean. Despite having a few buggy sections (the footer can get a little messy), it has some professional touches like a transparent introduction text over the main image. Not only good for real estate, the theme would work well for any service, or a classifieds site, perhaps.

8. A Basic “Build Me a Website” Theme

Quite often people are asked to “build a website” for a family member, colleague or friend that would like a really simple, professional looking site. I had a look around, and found the domain company Siteground has a whole lot of free Wordpress themes they give out to their customers, for just such a purpose. You can check the full list here. One site, known only as “Doggy” (or Siteground-wp53), I’ve found to be nice and functionable. It isn’t widget ready, which means you have to drop your sidebar stuff into the sidebar.php file in the Theme Editor. A nice and elegant theme. You can see a transformed version of it as a doctor’s website, via judicious image-file-deleting, here.

9. Nice Blank Bones for a Website (1)

Winterplain is a white - almost UberWhite - template that has subtle blue shadows, as you see in many company websites. I’m yet to use it, but can imagine inserting “Ad-like” section introductions in the header, sidebar and main post window would make a nice, servicable company site.

1. Takimata

A real gem, but not for everybody or every project, that’s for sure. One of the most experimental and unique designed free Wordpress themes I have come across, this theme opens up like a graphic design convention’s lunch menu. Beautiful work, and here’s hoping it inspires more experimentation in this and many other directions.

2. BlackBox

Another one I know there’s a person just waiting for - this is a really bold design with a black half for navigation, and a white half for content. Or you might swap them around with a bit of swapping of numbers in the style sheet. I can see a band information or any other slightly edgy project taking to it like a duck to water…

3. Facebook

I can’ think of a situation where you’d want to make a site that looks like Facebook, but it’s nice to think you could if you needed to. Here’s a pretty good Facebook clone, if you find yourself ever down that particular road!

4. Natural Power

Ok, not your usual theme. You might have your own idea what it’s useful for. For my money, I find the rounded curves, flip out sidebar, and groovy logo-like text area great for making video featuring sites. There’s something about the interface which is great for saying “watch me”! The grey background is quite lovely, but I think it works better with a plain background you can set up just by changing the numbers in the stylesheet.css (and renaming the background file that comes with it). 5. Cubist 1.0

I haven’t found a use for this theme yet - but I know there’s one waiting. It’d be a nice one to modify and to try out different colors with. The nice theme with this one is as you hover over each different text area, the whole square lights up - making for a unique, flash like theme.

6. Andreas

Some of our “unique” themes might look pretty normal at first sight, even plain. But it’s little features that can make all the difference in creating a unique looking site. In this case it’s the groovy side navigation, with little stripes that light up as you change each page. Add that to a theme which is easy to strip down and replace with your own artwork, and you have a handy additionto your arsenal.

7. Stripped

A stripped down Wordpress theme with a unique, typography focused theme that wins my eternal admiration for experimentation and creativity. One of the best designed themes out there, it has a completely unique navigation that I enjoy (although sometimes I forward my domains so that viewers land on a single post page, rather than the home page, to save time).

If you have a project that you want the look of stripped, but with a more conventional sidebar, WordpressTheme.me has made a hack that gives you this option. Basically, download a very Stripped-like theme (Estranged), and then add in our Stripped-like fonts, colors and sizes. You can get the hack here.

8. Revolution-X

Ok, the screenshot and dramatic design isn’t for my type of projects, it might be for yours. But this is a great and rare example of a transparent wordpress theme, and I’ve ended up using this for the bare bones for many of my sites.

If you replace the background image for any image of your choice, and strip away every other image in the download folder, you’ll have a great, transparent theme, useful for almost any project. What you’ll have is your image, with floating text all over the top of it. Change the fonts, colors and remove the borders for best results.

If anyone wants any more information, let me know, and I’ll post some examples and a tutorial for you. But do try it out for yourself, it makes for a great, professional looking theme!

9. Plain Box Theme

One of the most interesting and unique themes out there, this theme wouldn’t download last time I tried it. But it has great potential for a very unique site, and hopefully the file will be repaired by the author soon.

The theme has some very unique visual thumbnails on the front page, and then opens into a very visual-dominated, delux opening spread. Personally I would remove some of the extra elements on the front page, but you may have uses for them. Tell us how you go.

10. Make Your Own Theme!

If you still can’t find something unique - why not make your own, with this theme generator online wizard. Type in the variables you want (one sidebar, two sidebars, etc.), fonts, colors and images, and the Wordpress Theme Generator will convert it all into a downloadable, zipped file you can use like any other free theme. The back to basics theme that the experts use, when they want to create their themes from (almost) the ground up. I have utter respect for plaintxt.org for making this available. If it’s back to basics you want, give this theme a whirl.

2. Photopress

Ok, this might look like the opposite of a blank Wordpress theme, but after much searching, it’s my best bet. Why’s that? Well, for one it’s an elegant single column, meaning once you strip it back to nothing, you have an all white page with everything centered (two or three column themes will pull everything out of whack). The other nice thing is this theme comes with a nice navigation bar you can alter and leave in, if you still want some navigation.

In the next few weeks I’m going to strip this right down and widen the column out (I’ll even throw in the code you can cut and paste in to do it) to make the World’s Best all-white theme. Not to hype things too much…

3. Blog.txt

Blog.txt wordpress theme

Blog.txt is for those white-ites who also want to blog. It’s a pretty famous one that comes from plaintxt.org - the makers of Sandbox (above). We’ll post some groovy variations of this theme like Jotsheet soon. Here’s a screenshot.

Punjab could easily get lots as just another Wordpress theme with some picture in the header, amongst thousands like it in a megadirectory. But don’t be fooled. Remove the header, and you have a classy all-white theme, with header space built in, so you can easily add your own logo or design. Holding it here for prosterity for you!

1. How Does a Real Beginner Set Up a Site With Wordpress?

• Buy a domain you like
• Buy some cheap hosting with one-click Wordpress installation
• Add your domain. Click on “Fantastico” and add Wordpress to that domain
• Find a theme you like, and download the theme to your computer
• Go to the file manager part of your hosting. Find your domain folder, click through to “content”, then “themes”, there upload the theme. Press unzip
• Go to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin and login to Wordpress
  
• Go to “design” and select your new theme
• Done! You can now modify your theme (see below), or, just start blogging!

2. How Do I Change the Favicon (Little Icon) in the Address Bar?

Known as the favicon, this is the first thing I do after setting up a new site. Having a favicon - anything than the default browser one - instantly brands your site as a “real” one. Add this code (remove the spaces first so it’s one unbroken line) between the <head> and </head> part of my header.php file in your Theme Editor (the whole image is encoded there so there are no other files to upload).

It’s a really subtle white double arrow that hardly shows up even, but works well for any design or subject and gets you out of trouble quickly. After that, go to a free favicon generation site and upload a screenshot section of one of your site letters, or design your own from scratch.

3. What Should I Modify Next?

Always change the colors, fonts, and other easy things. After all, you don’t want your site to look like a cookie cutter job, do you? More tips about personalizing your theme coming soon.

4. What Colors Should I Choose for My Theme?

The choice is up to you, but I recommend simple and subtler color themes. Everyone can go for bright or primary colors - using subtler ones will mark your site out as ’serious’ or ‘real’.

If you still can’t chose, pick a site you like the design of. Now go to I Like Your Colors and type in the address. It will give you a readout of the HTML codes used. Paste them over the ones that come with your theme. Or, if you want to chose yourself, here’s a handy HTML color chart (zoom in to see the numbers).

I’ve just found a great theme called Monochrome Gallery by Graph Paper Press. It’s a lovely white minimalist theme, with an elegant magazine style. But it took a bit of working out to get it going, though.

So, rather than cram the author’s comment box, I’ll post my instructions as a kind of mini appendix guide.

Live Demo

A live demo of a site using it would be great to see, to try it out before you install. You can find a great one here.

Pullquote

The “pullquote” option doesn’t seem to work in the slideshow (it just displays the first bit of the post). Any tips here would be welcome.

You can, however, get a pullquote for the previews if you use the “excerpt” function on Wordpress. Enter some text and it will appear in the bottom 5 small previews.

Thumbnails

It took me a long while to get the thumbnails working. Go to Settings > Miscellaneous and change the default photo sizes, as the author suggests.

Ok, now go to a post you want a thumbnail for. Upload your images into the post as per normal. In the upload window, make sure you select the “thumbnail” option before you insert them into the post. This will make them the size you want eventually in the preview.

Ok, now switch to HTML view. Look for the code that deals with this image.

Now just copy the section of code that says http://yourblogname.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/yourimagename-128pxx128px.jpg

(Note: you have to select this section of the code because you need the “128px” embedded into the filename. This will make the image display the right size, and hence will appear in the thumbnail area.

The author’s screenshot of the fields filled in doesn’t show this all-important end bit.)

Paste that code into the left hand box of the “Custom Field” section, and type “thumbnail” into the right hand side. Hey presto! It should work.

Slideshow (the Big Black Box on Top)

This wasn’t too easy. The author writes in “1. Getting Started”

By default, the slideshow in Monochrome Author displays the most recent posts. The number of posts displayed in the slideshow can be controlled via your WP admin panel by clicking Options > Reading.

Actually this seems to be in Settings > Reading (in the latest Wordpress).

Ok, I’m still not exactly sure of everything I fiddled with to get it going after that. But, in essence, the key seems to be that you need to add photos to at least 5 posts - and add custom fields to all of these posts (in the same way as you added thumbnails, above) - for the slideshow to start working. Adding just one and ‘waiting’ to see if it will work won’t cut it! Add all five and you should be rocking.

Customization

I’ve already removed the background image to make a plain background, which is much better IMHO. The comments coming up quickly over the slideshow are a little jarring, so I’m going to try to see if i can have them static over the image, slower, or not at all (as in the live demo example at the top of the tutorial).

I’m basically posting my altered Estranged style.css for you to paste into your copy to try.

Step 1.

Upload Estranged, and change the name for all the image files, in the Themes>Estranged>Images folder. (This effectively comments them out, leading to an all-white background when the theme can’t find them).

Step 2.

Open up the stylesheet file (style.css) within your blog, by going to the Design > Theme Editor section.

Highlight all of the code in this file (you can copy/paste it somewhere - if you want a backup of the old version).

Highlight all of the code after the —-Code Start—- section on this page, and copy/ paste it over the old style.css content.

Press save, and that’s it. (It is very minor changes like font size and color, but it’s easier to give you the whole file than 30 little bits to do.)

You might also like to tweak and “comment out” sections of the sidebar, single post, and page template files, to your liking.
